Emily and Allison Contemporary Issues

Every single day, 16 million children in America struggle with hunger. That is 1 out of 5 children, a heartbreaking number (Hunger Facts Carousel). Many of these children are going to school hungry each day, which is hindering them from reaching their full potential. Even those who eat before they come to school often do not have a nutritious breakfast. In fact, 72% of households with children report buying the cheapest food available, even though they know it is not the healthiest option (Hunger in America). We believe that universal breakfast in schools is the solution to this problem. With this change, every child would have access to a healthy breakfast each morning without the stigma of partaking in free and reduced breakfast. By providing breakfast to all students, children would be healthier, more focused, better behaved, and have improved cognitive development and test scores.
