After the wonderful broadway show, we capped off the night exploring Times Square, the original Macy's, and grabbing 2 slices of pizza and a soda for only 2.75! Now, I'm getting excited to actually start the service tomorrow morning!
What causes poverty? Are people who are experiencing poverty to be blamed for their circumstances? How do we as citizens address issues of urban poverty? Follow along as students of the INTD:076/LEAD:112 Explorations of Urban Poverty: Des Moines & New York City, an engaged citizen and experiential learning course at Drake University, collectively try to unpack the issue of urban poverty. Broadway, Pizza, and Times Square!
Once the mid afternoon arrived, we found ourselves leaving the tenement walking tour and rushing to make the 3 o'clock broadway show, A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder. Surprisingly, this show had some connections to our course on poverty. One of the musical number's, in fact, revolved around the idea of not "understanding the poor" and thinking that those in poverty are their due to choice and individual weakness, a common thought of the past and still a prevalent thought today. After discussing and studying poverty over the past week, the class and I have moved more towards a realization that the system is the problem, rather than the individual. The question of how to fix the system is still a very difficult and intricate topic to solve and agree on politically.
